I received "The Last Book" by Michael Collins when Amazon offered it for free. I have to admit that I probably wouldn't have bought the book because I was unfamiliar with the author's work. I am very glad that I read it, though, because it was a great book and I look forward to reading more of the author's books. There were some mechanical errors, such as missing words, but this did not detract from very fine storytelling. In some ways, the writing style was reminiscent of Alistair MacLean's, but was imprinted with Mr. Collins' own style, that was designed to appeal to a more contemporary audience.

Overall, this book was a thriller, but several flashbacks added depth to the characterization, which was as integral to the book as the plot and actions. So while there was plenty of suspense and action, the characters were what made the book stand out. The plot and characterization carried the book, and it did not substitute a lot of gratuitous violence, sex and swearing in lieu of these. Yes, there was some violence, sex and swearing---this was a thriller, after all--- but it was fairly mild and not overly graphic.

This was an enjoyable book, perfect for curling up with on a rainy day, or taking to the beach. I wouldn't hesitate to recommend it to my friends or my teenaged grandchildren. I see there is to be a sequel to "The Last Book", and I definitely plan to buy it.

The Last Book A Thriller edition by Michael Collins Literature Fiction eBooks Reviews

A little slow getting started as all the characters were introduced, but the author did a great job of entwining all the story lines. The suspense was great with lots of twists and turns I didn't see coming
I received a complimentary copy of The Last Book A Thriller in exchange for an honest review. The plot was a bit farfetched. I usually don’t mind that, but this one was a bit of a stretch even for me. I thought that the characters were OK, but there seemed to be so many of them. In addition, the author employed a device in which each chapter focused on a different character and, sometimes, a different time frame. I found that to be disjointed and confusing. All in all, I just didn’t care for the book and cannot recommend it.
I received this book free to read and review.
Although this novel stands on its own the ending does leave the way open for a follow up or even a series as there are a number of loose ends that have not been tidied up.
Initially I found it a bit confusing as it is a novel made up of a number of threads and I did not think they would come together in fact I kept reading just to find out who "The boy" was it may well be me but it took me about 67% (kindle scale) when the identity of the boy was revealed for me to realise that the sections relating to the boy were in fact set much earlier in time than much of the rest of the book. For me it would have helped if the chapters had been headed 10 years earlier or present day or something like that which would have got me into it earlier. Without going into the plot which is original and unexpected it does hinge on the trust given to a teacher or the whole story would collapse. I did think that although there was an interesting twist at the end it did bring the main plot to a conclusion rather quickly and easily.
In summary an interesting book that made me think, well worth reading.
Badly edited, with cardboard cut out characters, an unbelievable plot and an anti-climactic ending. I never give up on a novel but with this I was tempted
This is the first work I've read by Michael Collins and I'll no doubt seek out his other work.

Characters in this thriller were carefully crafted but it can be a bit confusing at first to figure out who is who. The novel moves quickly from one time to another, one continent to another. Sorting it all out is part of the fun.

A manic plot to control the world is viewed from all sides the man responsible and those trying to counter his efforts. Technology plays a huge role in the story and it's actually quite believable!

I found the end to be less than satisfactory and that's the reason for the four stars. Maybe there's a sequel in the works?

In any case, it was a good read ... keeps you guessing. There are a few editing errors but not enough to distract from the work itself.
The writing was fast-paced and I really wanted to finish it. I have to say that I couldn't put it down.

However, the build up was a little confusing. Maybe it was just me, but I was having a hard time figuring out all the characters who were being developed independently. The chapters were jumping from character to character, building a background, but I wasn't sure about any goal. It's already been mentioned, but I had read over 60% of the book before I finally figured out that the chapters were bouncing back and forth...someone's past, then the present. I guess I'd actually figured out that the story of "the boy" was from the past since someone had made money off Microsoft before it became big, but it wasn't clear how "the boy" connected to anything until some time past 60%.

As much as I love the futuristic/techno-thriller/apocalyptic type book, I found the actual premise a little too unbelievable. Then, when all the pieces started coming together, it all seemed a little rushed and pat. There were even more typos and basic editing problems in the latter half of the book. Those kinds of things don't stress me out too much, but they add to my feeling that the second half of the book was rushed.

I'd like to give a summary, but the author gives an adequate, although minimal, description. I can't really describe more of it without giving plot lines away...and there are soooo many characters and sub-plots that I wouldn't be capable of giving a brief summary.

Like another reviewer said, I also believe the book could have benefited from a great editor. Ironic, since the ghost-writing and editing was one of the themes in the book.

I did look to see if this author had written any other books, because he intrigued me.
