Ape Benjamin B Beck 9781628060805 Books

This author of this book is a respected scientist in the field of ape cognition, but he tells a good story. He skillfully takes what we know apes are capable of, adds a dash of "what if" to stretch that boundary just a bit, and weaves a tale of human-chimpanzee interaction that will leave you thinking, Prepare to have your ideas about our close cousins challenged.

Full disclosure: I am also a scientist, and I have worked at Gishwati Forest -- now a Rwandan national park -- for several years. From that perspective, I can vouch that this book is loaded with accurate details about the forest itself, the surrounding area (including the real-life village of Kinihira), and Rwandan culture. These details lend texture and depth to the context of the story.

The story itself is an easy read, and the author includes a brief and easily understood Afterward to identify which chimpanzee behaviors from the story are based on real scientific results and which are speculative. You'll be surprised at how much of it has a factual basis; it will get you wondering about how rich the mental and social lives of chimpanzees must be.

At the bottom line, the test of a book is whether it draws you into the theater of the mind and tells a story worth hearing. This book easily passes that test. Recommended, especially for readers who value conservation and those who wonder about the animal mind.

Ape Benjamin B Beck 9781628060805 Books Reviews

Superb book that wonderfully teaches a lot about animal behavior while intertwined with an exquisitely developed plot.. Dr Beck know Rwanda, primates and the nature of the human primate as well.
Intriguing, suspenseful and so realistic I thought it might be a true story! I just couldn't put this book down. Mr. Beck managed to bring to life the plight of an endangered species in a realistic story that not only touches your heart, but keeps you interested to the end. The scientific notes in the epilogue are as interesting as the book itself, as it helps us to see just how "human" these apes really are. I highly recommend this book a great read.
What a well-crafted and unique story. This is one of those little books that takes you by surprise and you just don't want to put it down. A most unsuspecting story that is brought to life and plausibility by the careful insertion of the author's solid scientific knowledge. The characters, all of them, including the non-humans, are well developed and the story takes us into a realm that not many of us will have visited before. I refuse to say anything about the plot (except that it is excellent) because if I had prior knowledge of it I might not have been inclined to read the story. So glad I did! This is definitely a book that I'd recommend.
This book is a provocative and engaging page-turner that leaves the reader breathless, exhilarated and much more aware of questions that human beings ought to be asking about non-human beings, including and especially the other great apes with whom we share the planet. Are our emotions, our behaviors and our vaunted "intelligence" really unique? The dialogue is beautifully written as are the poignant descriptions of the tiny community of chimpanzees that have somehow survived in this fragment of African montane rainforest. The book is recommended for all readers from middle school through adults and will be a good basis for discussing the relationship between people and the other species that inhabit the living earth. Why should we care about the rapid extinction of species currently underway? This book offers compelling reasons to care about the animals that are our closest relatives. Filled with surprises and unexpected plot elements, this story will engage readers from the beginning. Highly recommended!
What a great book!!! A very interesting and informative book on Apes. The characters are well developed, both chimps and humans. Immediately the reader is “hooked” for the story line is very interesting and plausible. If you love apes, that is orangutans and chimps, you will enjoy these creatures and will learn much about their habits, their interaction among themselves and their ability to relate intimately with humans. Dr Beck brings his indepth knowledge of primates to this book as he develops this very interesting story. At the end of the book he answers many questions that may have come to mind during the reading, as he explains what behaviors are scientifically documented and which are possible to occur.

What ever your knowledge base is on primates, you will learn more about these wonderful creatures. Do they really know value of items that they "trade"? How do they use body language? What behaviors control the chimp community? Who is in control and how is that determined? How do chimps relate to humans and vice versa? Can the chimps understand human language? Do chimps have their own language? Read this book and you will be fascinated by the information that you will learn.

This book should be read by anyone interested in studying animal behavior. High school and college students could have excellent discussions on the primate behavior and interactions within the primate community.
